Assembly Press and Brick Books Embark on an Exciting Merger
Assembly Press and Brick Books Join Forces to Shape a Stronger Future for Canadian Publishing
Two remarkable independent publishers—Assembly Press and Brick Books—have announced that they are joining forces. The merger, officially revealed on October 20, 2025, marks a bold and collaborative step forward for both houses, who were are proud to support as members of the Ontario Book Publishers Organization (OBPO).
The partnership is rooted in care and sustainability. By combining resources and expertise, the presses aim to strengthen their ability to support authors, nurture emerging voices, and ensure long-term resilience in an ever-changing publishing landscape.
Despite merging operations, both presses will continue to maintain their own editorial independence. Leigh Nash will remain Publisher of Assembly Press, and Alayna Munce will continue as Publisher of Brick Books. Current Brick Books CFO Brenda Leifso will be pursuing new opportunities outside of publishing.
Founded in 2023 by Leigh Nash, Andrew Faulkner, and Debby de Groot, Assembly Press has quickly earned a reputation for publishing sharp, daring, and beautifully crafted works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that connect Canadian writing with international literary conversations.
Brick Books, established in 1975 by Stan Dragland and Don McKay, holds a revered place in Canadian letters as one of the world’s few publishers devoted entirely to poetry. Since 2020, Munce and Leifso have guided the press with passion and vision, upholding its reputation as a cherished home for poets and poetry readers alike.

“This is the best path forward for both presses to continue being innovative and flexible while staying true to who we are,” says Leigh Nash of Assembly Press. “We believe deeply in the future of Canadian poetry and in the strength of an independent publishing sector that supports it.”
Alayna Munce of Brick Books adds, “Assembly Press has impressed me from the start with its author-centred approach and ethical foundation. Partnering with them is an exciting next chapter for Brick Books and for our shared community of writers.”
Together, these two OBPO member publishers represent nearly five decades of Canadian literary excellence, and the merger offers significant promise for the future of their publishing endeavours.
