Walking Cities Project Pairs Dionne Brand with Edinburgh-based poet Author Vahni Capildeo to Explore the City
One thing the CanLit community can agree on is that we all love Dionne Brand - one our most versatile, powerful, and eloquent writers. So it's a treat to see her represent Toronto in this video created by the British Council as part of an intercultural digital media initiative that pairs UK and Canadian writers. She strolls Bloor Street with Vahni Capildeo, a celebrated Trinidadian writer based in Scotland. The program has also paired writers in Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Montreal.
Brand and Capildeo share a fascinating conversation about Toronto and its literature (Capildeo shares her love of Austin Clarke) as they walk the city. The video is meditative and interesting as the two discuss questions of language, literature, and culture, and Brand's liquid gold voice alone is worth the six minutes.
