Language possesses the unique capacity for the figurative–wherein one thing is compared to another to clarify and vivify. But what makes a good metaphor or simile and where do they come from? Using examples from prose, poetry and song, we will explore the satisfactions, frustrations and mysteries of figurative language and how it is inherent to a writer’s voice and style.
